Abstract

Background: Oral cavity is also offset by the susceptibility of experiencing lesions namely traumatic ulcers. Current treatment still has weaknesses and side effects. Honey is an antioxidant herbal that contains hypertonic sugar and active compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids and saponins that have the potential to increase epithelialization in healing ulcers.

Aim: This study aims to examine the comparison of cultivated honey (Apis cerana) and forest honey (Apis dorsata) in epithelialization in traumatic ulcers.

Method: The study design was post test with a control group using 27 wistar rats divided into 9 groups based on duration 3, 5, and 7 days and each duration consisted of povidone iodine groups, cultivated honey, and forest honey.

Result: The mean epithelial thickness of the forest honey group on the 3rd day was significantly different p = 0.002 and showed the highest results (85.72.93 ± 11.74) when compared to the culture honey group (53.37 ± 8.51) and the povidone iodine group (44.71 ± 2.76). Day 5 also showed similar results with significance p = 0.003, the forest honey group was higher than the culture honey and the povidone iodine group (165.54 ± 21.23; 110.98 ± 3.75; 93.19 ± 15.99 , sequentially). Day 7, the forest honey group reached the peak of the mean epithelial thickness (118.77 ± 30.73). The povidone iodine group was higher than the honey culture group, although no significant difference.

Conclusion: Administration of forest honey significantly increases the mean thickness of the epithelium compare to honey cultivation and reaches its highest point on the 7th day.
