Bali Dental Journal — Rights and Responsibilities Over Published Content

Bali Dental Journal (BDJ) operates on the principle that authors retain intellectual ownership of their published work, while the journal holds the right to distribute and archive the content. This policy clarifies the respective ownership rights and responsibilities of authors, the journal, and third parties in relation to all content published in BDJ.

Author Ownership of Content

Authors are the sole intellectual owners of the original content they create and submit to BDJ. Upon acceptance and publication, authors grant BDJ a non-exclusive, worldwide license to publish and distribute their work in print, electronic, and any other media, in perpetuity. This grant does not transfer copyright ownership to the journal.

What Authors Own

The intellectual content, original text, data, figures, and other creative contributions made by the author(s). Copyright in the article remains with the named author(s).

What BDJ Holds

The right to publish, distribute, and archive the article, manage the public record of publication, and issue corrections, expressions of concern, or retractions when necessary.

Institutional and Funder Policies

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their submission complies with all applicable institutional, employer, or funder policies regarding copyright and content ownership. Where a funding agency or employer asserts copyright over the research outputs, authors must disclose this at the time of submission and confirm that the required permissions to publish under a CC BY 4.0 license have been secured.

BDJ welcomes submissions from government-funded research and international grants. In such cases, compliance with the funder's open-access mandate (e.g., immediate open-access deposit) is supported by BDJ's fully open-access model, with no embargo period.

Research Data Ownership

BDJ encourages authors to make underlying research data publicly available to support reproducibility and transparency. Authors should note that:

Data Sharing Guidance

Ownership: Research data is owned by the author(s) or their institution, not by BDJ. BDJ does not claim ownership over any supplementary data files submitted alongside a manuscript.

Deposition: Authors are encouraged to deposit data in recognized repositories (e.g., Figshare, Dryad, Zenodo, OSF) and to include a Data Availability Statement in their manuscript citing the repository DOI.

Restrictions: Where data cannot be publicly shared due to ethical, legal, or privacy constraints (e.g., patient data), a statement explaining the restriction must be included in the manuscript.

Ownership of Editorial Content

Editorial content produced by BDJ staff, including editorials, journal policies, website text, and editorial correspondence, is the intellectual property of Bali Dental Journal and Universitas Udayana. This content may not be reproduced or distributed without written permission from the Editorial Office.

The BDJ name, logo, and journal branding are proprietary to Universitas Udayana and may not be used by third parties without prior written authorization.

Third-Party Content in Manuscripts

Any third-party material included in a manuscript (figures, tables, images, text extracts) that is protected by copyright must be accompanied by written permission from the rights holder, allowing publication under a CC BY 4.0 open-access license. Authors bear full responsibility for obtaining such permissions prior to submission.

Important: If third-party rights holders do not grant permission for open-access publication, the restricted material must be removed from the manuscript and replaced with alternative, freely licensed content.
