Abstract
Background: Dental caries is still a problem of dental health. Dental plaque is one of the factors related to the development of dental caries.
Objective: Proves whether the decrease in plaque index after chewing anna apple (Malus sylvestris Mill) is better than chewing xylitol bubblegum in children age 12 years in SD Saraswati 1 Denpasar.
Method: This research was an experimental study with a cross over design, with a wash out period of 14 days conducted in Desember 2019 to February 2020. The sampling technique used was consecutive sampling, then randomized into 2 treatment groups. The plaque index assessment method used is the Turesky-Gillmore-Glickman plaque index, modified by Quigley-Hein.
Result: The male subjects were 41 people (58.57%), while the female subjects were 29 people (41.43%). Chewing anna apple (Malus sylvestris Mill) and chewing xylitol bubblegum resulted in a decrease in plaque index. On day 1 and day 15 it was found that chewing anna apple (Malus sylvestris Mill) was better in decreasing the plaque index than chewing xylitol bubblegum.
Conclusion: Chewing anna apple (Malus sylvestris Mill) is better in decreasing the plaque index than chewing xylitol bubblegum in children age 12 years in SD Saraswati 1 Denpasar.
